Word Lesson Plan Structure
Class details
Describe the instructional grouping you plan to use (whole class, small groups) and why. Estimate the amount of time you expect the lesson to take. Include the grade level and school where you will be teaching the lesson.
Materials List everything you will need to do the activity, including student materials for the activity, written materials, books, props, anything else. Describe how you will efficiently get materials distributed. Include the word set you will focus on. Provide full reference for any materials you used in preparing lesson.
Goal(s) Why are you teaching this lesson? What are you trying to help students learn as readers?
Objectives What are the specific objectives stated in terms of student learning? That is, what will you have students do cognitively and physically in today's lesson in order to achieve your lesson goal?
Introduction How will you begin? You might start by posing a problem, asking a question, doing a demonstration, telling a story, etc. This probably includes letting students know the point of the activity and why it's important. If you don't directly tell the students, then the lesson is structured to enable them to deduce it, and you include in the body or conclusion what you will be doing to help students process the point of the activity.
Body Be sure to include all of the steps necessary to facilitate the activity. Provide enough detail that someone else (e.g., a substitute teacher) could take it and teach the activity.) What will you (the teacher) do? What will the students do?
Conclusion How will you conclude the activity (bring closure)? Will students discover the point themselves, or will you need to help them?
Assessment How will you assess how well the students are doing during the activity? After the activity is concluded? What evidence will you seek? (n.b. "participating quietly" and "following directions" are not evidence of learning success) How will students know how they have done/what they have learned?
